Cast Iron


A tough and brittle iron alloy with a lot of carbon, usually having 2-4% carbon. It’s famous for holding onto heat well, being durable, and being used a lot in construction, cars, and manufacturing.


Cast iron is a type of iron alloy renowned for its high carbon content and exceptional strength. The production process involves melting iron and combining it with a small amount of carbon, typically ranging from 2% to 4%. This molten iron is then poured into molds or casts, giving rise to the term “cast iron,” and resulting in the formation of diverse shapes and objects.

The defining characteristics of cast iron include its outstanding heat retention, durability, and resistance to wear and tear. It finds common applications in scenarios demanding strength and resistance to deformation, such as in engine blocks, pipes, cookware, and architectural elements.

Various types of cast iron exist, with one notable variant being gray cast iron. Recognized by its graphite-like appearance due to the presence of flakes of graphite within the material, gray cast iron is esteemed for its excellent machinability. It is frequently utilized in applications such as engine components and manhole covers.

Another type is white cast iron, distinguished by a higher carbon content and the absence of graphite. White cast iron is exceptionally hard and brittle, making it suitable for applications requiring high wear resistance, like grinding balls and crushing machinery.

Ductile cast iron, also referred to as nodular cast iron, presents a different variation. It features a nodular or spherical graphite structure, imparting increased toughness and ductility compared to other forms of cast iron. Ductile cast iron is commonly employed in automotive components, pipes, and other applications demanding both strength and flexibility.
